Stavenhagen, a former small Mecklenburg farming town, which was first mentioned in a document in 1252, undoubtedly owes its popularity to its most famous son, Fritz Reuter, the most important writer of Low German, who was born here in the old town hall on the market square in 1810.
The Fritz Reuter Museum has been housed in this building since 1949. The Fritz Reuter Museum has been housed in this building since 1949. Remodelled and extended several times, the exhibition “Fritz Reuter – Life, Work and Impact” vividly and vividly documents the highs and lows in the life and work of the great Mecklenburg writer. Manuscripts, paintings by Reuter, contemporary documents and artefacts from Reuter’s estate can be viewed in this modern literary exhibition.
Several sound samples and the children’s series “för mi” are integrated into the tour, as is a film room in which feature-length films and television series based on Reuter’s work can be viewed.
The painter and illustrator Ernst Lübbert (1879 – 1915), who spent his school years in Stavenhagen, is also celebrated at the museum. The permanent exhibition “Ernst Lübbert – Life and Work” has been on display in Building 2 since 2005.
In addition to this, current artists present themselves in temporary exhibitions and we display exhibits from our collection in special exhibitions.
